The dramatic expansion of the digital infrastructure on a global basis is radically reshaping the way companies gather, analyze, and use information. By 2007, the number of Internet users is expected to almost double from the current 888 million to 1.5 billion. At present, up to 18 billion authoritative DNS queries are sent over the Internet every day, nearly 30 times the number sent in 2001, and IDC estimates that by the end of 2006, approximately 60 billion emails will be sent on a daily basis. This year alone, an estimated 16 trillion wireless messages will be transmitted.
As the amount of data continues to explode, companies find themselves under increasing pressure to gather relevant information in a cost-effective way and use that information to enhance their competitive position.
